Inaugural Cobram Crown a McHugh Success

The 2nd Round of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour was held over the Australia Day weekend on Australia’s largest inland beach.Cobram Booroga played host at Thompsons Beach where players had to deal with temperatures in excess of 40 degerees on the 1st day of competition.Sunday the cool change in the weather came but the competition heated up as some of Australia’s best athletes including Olympians Becchara Palmer & Nikki Laird and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Chris McHugh worked their way into the Semi Finals.

The men’s competition showed the depth of Beach Volleyball in Australia with every team working hard through the entire draw.Chris McHugh & Zac Schubert eventually took the crown after an epic final match 20-22, 21-16, 17-15 against Marcus Ferguson & Tim Dickson.“How good is this venue.It was a great event and one I hope we can keep coming back to.Cobram Booroga have really done an amazing job here.”Said Chris McHugh after their win.

The men’s Bronze medal went to Chris Blake & Gareth Mann who defeated up and coming Volleyroos in the quarterfinals and then taking down the Victorian combination of Garang Anyang & Joseph Yigit.

On the women’s side, “Super Monday” created some amazing games with Victorian local Christie Jenkins and her partner from the US up against the Olympians in a tight final with Nikki and Becchara eventually victorious 21-11 & 21- 18.The Bronze Medal went to Sydney siders of Alice Rohkamper & Lucia Michalovicova defeating Sarah Richter & Michaela Vorlova 21-8 & 21-10.
