The Queensland PIRATES lead the way in the both the men’s and the women’s action after four rounds of the Australian Volleyball League.

While the girls are undefeated, the PIRATES men only loss so far came on Friday night going down 2-3 to UTSSU . Despite the sluggish start to the weekend campaign Craig Marshall’s men recovered to win the 3 remaining matches comfortably 3-1, 3-0, 3-0 and sit 4 points clear of Canberra on top of the Eastern Conference.

However the Canberra HEAT might be 2 points back on the ladder but they have played two less matches than the Pirates and are yet to drop a set. A hailstorm of serving missiles from a seasoned Canberra HEAT team did the damage to a gallant Sydney WARRIORS. Despite the 3-0 score line the WARRIORS lived up to their name fighting to the death on every play and came within just 2 points of winning sets against the former National Champions! The return rubber is set for this weekend and the WARRIORS will be looking for revenge at home in Sydney.

In the Southern Conference the WA HORNETS are on top after travelling to South Australia for their first two matches of the season. Both matches were close with the STORM and the HORNETS experimenting with their line ups. Quite a few unforced errors are to be expected early on in the campaign but in the end WA too good taking both matches 3-1.

The Queensland women matching their male counterparts by leading the Eastern Conference. The PIRATES showed plenty of determination to remain undefeated after their opening 4 matches against UTSSU. Coach Rhiannon Tooker said “I was very pleased overall. They were able to regain control of the final game and did well to come from behind in the 3rd set.”

Only one point back on the ladder is the Sydney AMAZONS who hit back after losing their first game of the season to the Centre of Excellence over a week ago. The AMAZONS travelled to Canberra on the weekend for two brilliantly entertaining matches. The HEAT were defiant in defence but the AMAZONS attack was devastating! Sydney winning both matches 3-1 to put them on a 3 match winning streak.

In the Southern conference the Uni BLUES and the WA PEARLS share top place with two wins a piece.

Round 5 both men and women gets under way on Saturday afternoon with the Uni BLUES hosting WA.
