Australia’s Beach Volleyball team get first taste of GC2018 Stadium

After landing on the Gold Coast yesterday ahead of the Commonwealth Games and settling into village life the Australian Women’s Beach Volleyball team were up early today for their first training run on the impressive purpose built stadium at Coolangatta.

Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar were full of praise for the arena they are about to play on and do Australia proud.

“It’s absolutely beautiful. I think it captures what’s really great about the Gold Coast, the waves in the background, the apartments overlooking the stadium with all the Aussie flags on the balconies, it’s really special.” said Clancy.

The Aussie pair know the weight of a nation will be on them as the sport of beach volleyball makes it long awaited debut at the Commonwealth Games and there could be no more fitting place than the Gold Coast.

“I can imagine the finals with the 4000 seats in the stadium full and you look up there will be people in the apartments all watching, it will be pretty awesome.”

“These are the moments you dream of, you start getting butterflies, the hairs on your skin stand up, your tummy starts churning so yeah it’s very special. said Clancy.

The Aussies big challengers for a medal are expected to be Canada as well as traditional rivals New Zealand and England. Vanuatu are also highly fancied as they try to win a first ever Commonwealth Games medal for their country in any sport.

Cyprus will be Australia’s first match up on Friday and little is known about what to expect.

“It’s an unknown for us but I think its perfect for our first hit out, we are just excited to get out there. Mariafe and I, no matter what tournament we are in, just take it game by game, always looking to improve and put our game style out there, so we are just excited.” added Clancy.

The Australian pair have had an incredible run of success since forming in just October last year for the Asian and World tour but they believe they are still on the up.

“Definitely! Even though we are still fairly new, we’ve got more training, we’ve learnt even more about each other about where we can take our game. We’ve had a good preparation so we are just looking to keep the ball rolling.” Said Clancy.

The pairs relationship off the court has been a big factor in their seemingly instant success and the electric combination they have formed on the court.

“We share a lot of mutual values off the court, we both have very relaxed feel and we are both very confident with our game style and its all that coming together that creates some pretty exciting moments on the court.”
