Volleyroos look to future with AVC Cup squad

Australia has looked to the future with a blend of experience and several of the country’s most exciting youth and junior athletes, for the Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup beginning in Thailand tomorrow.

Helloworld Volleyroos coach, Roberto Santilli, will base his team around Australian senior team members Jordan Richards and Thomas Hodges, and fringe players Mitchell Tulley, Jordan Colotti and Arshdeep Dosanjh.

Santilli has one eye on the qualifying campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after the Volleyroos suffered the heartbreak of missing Rio by just one spot.

He has also selected promising teenagers Elliott Viles, James Takken, Max Senica and Lewis Kehl to receive a taste of top-level volleyball, with the AVC Cup being contested by the top eight teams from the 2015 Asian Championships.

Australia has been drawn in the same pool as Rio Olympians, Iran, as well as 2015 Asian Champions, Japan, and South Korea.

Rounding out the Volleyroos squad for Thailand are three players who have already signed professional contracts - Libero Malachi Murch, Simon Hone and Trent O’Dea.

Most of the 12-member squad are part of the Volleyball Australia AIS Centre of Excellence.

The Volleyroos will open their campaign against Iran on Thursday.
