McHugh/Schumann power through Fiji at Commonwealth Games!

The Australian men pairing of Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann started their Commonwealth Games with bang making their intentions clear from the opening point against Fiji.

Having a late match at 9.30pm meant the Aussies had plenty of time to think about how they might approach their first match and they left no one in the stadium with much doubt about what they were here to do.

The Australians were rarely troubled and whenever they did have to battle it out in a rally it almost always ended with a crushing cross court smash from the giant they call “McHuge”.

The first set was over quickly 21-9 and Fiji were hoping they could reset in the break between sets but there was no let up coming from Australia.

The home favourites got out to a 12-2 lead in the second set as the Fijians had no answers to the big power game of McHugh/Schumann.

There were a few exciting rallies in the second set that had the packed pro Aussie Coolangatta stadium pumped but McHugh and Schumann were on a mission and  simply had too much power and class, closing out their opening match in straight sets 21-9, 21-9.

The Australian men have a day off tomorrow with their next match V St Kitts and Nevis on Sunday.
