Australia’s 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalists reunited for the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships

Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann have reunited for the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships in Udon Thani, Thailand, next month.

McHugh and Schumann last played a competition together at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast where they won gold.

Damien Schumann says it’s great to be back playing with Chris McHugh who is returning from injury. “It feels really good. We enjoy playing together. Chris and I have a bit of history and we have learnt so much from playing with other partners.”

Volleyball Australia’s Selection Committee has also nominated the men’s combinations of Zac Schubert and Max Guehrer while Cole Durant will play alongside Paul Burnett.

In the women’s competition Australia will be represented by three teams.

Nikki Laird will play with Becchara Palmer, Phoebe Bell will team up with Britt Kendall, with Phoebe’s regular partner Jessyka Nguamo out through injury, while the developing team of Jasmine Fleming and Stefanie Fejes will also represent Australia on the recommendation of Academy Head Coach, Margo Wiltens.

The Asian Championships are an important lead up to the Asian Continental Cup Qualification process for the Tokyo Olympics to be conducted over the coming months.

The current Asian champions, Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar, did not stand for selection in view of the heavy competition program they will have with the World Tour this year.
